Why are we here? Part 1 (Class)

Course: What's Next - Vision For OSLM

October 05, 2020 | Kevin Austin
  • God is leading us into the future that He is preparing for us while at the same time preparing us for that future.
  • Are we going to run back to what was or follow God into the future that He is preparing for us?
  • Before we can answer the question: what’s next? We must first answer the question: why are we here?
  • The simple answer to the question why are we here comes down to one word: God.
  • God created us- We are God’s masterpiece in process.
  • God saved us– In Jesus, the ultimate price was paid for our salvation that we might be loved, forgiven, saved, and belong to Him.
  • God is at work– There has never been a breath that we have breathed when the Holy Spirit has not been at work in us pointing us to Jesus and revealing to us who God is so that we might know Him even as we are fully known by Him.
  • As we consider what’s next, we ground ourselves in the foundational truth that we are here because of God and His work in our lives.

Did you know that the name of God is never mentioned in the book of Esther?. Yet in reading the chapters of Esther, we never once question God’s presence or miss the works of His mighty hand. The one reference that comes the closest to mentioning God is when Mordechai tells Esther that if she does not help, “relief and deliverance for the Jews will come from another place”. Mordechai then challenges Esther with the infamous question “And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”

Whether His name is mentioned in the pages or not, the reader of the Bible knows that God has prepared Esther with a purpose for this exact time and place.

We can be sure that there were moments when Esther was taken from her home, was stuck living in a haram, and even when she was made queen, that she asked herself “Why am I here?”

As the readers of the text, we have the advantage to know that God brought her to that time and place and used her as a means to save His people and keep His promise to make Israel a great nation.

Though we may not live in a haram or be Queen of Persia, we too find ourselves now asking the question “Why are we here?” As individuals and as a ministry placed in the Tri-Valley in 2020, we have the opportunity to ask ourselves a similar question to that which Mordechai asked Esther. But let’s phrase it a little different: And who knows but that you have been called to be the Church for such a time as this?

Pray: God, we know you have prepared us for this exact time and place. Help us to trust in you as we follow where you lead. Amen.
