Why are we here? Part 2 (Class)

Course: What's Next - Vision For OSLM

October 12, 2020 | Sara Agee
  • Once we figure out how we got to where we are, it’s important to remember why we are here?
  • Last week we were reminded that the people of Israel were where they were because of God and his work in their story.  But why were they there?
  • Israel was called to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation that the world might know God through them.
  • Why are we here?  The Sunday School answer still applies.  We are here because of God created us.  God saved us.  God is transforming us.
  • If we are here because of God, then why are we here?
  • In the Great Commission, Jesus calls us to be disciples who make disciples.
  • In 2 Corinthians 5, Paul invites us to drink deep of the “Kool-Aid” of God’s love that we might be changed, captivated, and controlled by it.
  • We are all sent as God’s ambassadors that God might bring people to Himself through us.
  • We are here to be the hands and feet of Jesus to a world in need of love, grace, hope, and most importantly Jesus.

Read John 8:31-32, John 13:34-35, and John 15:1-11.  As you read these passages, consider the following questions:

  • What is Jesus saying a disciple of His looks like?
  • How are the three glimpses of what a disciple looks like just as relevant today as they were 2,000 years ago?
  • What does it look like in your life to be a follower of Jesus?
  • The Great Commission calls us to make disciples. Why is living as a disciple so important to Christ?

Read John 3:16 and 1 Timothy 2:4-7.  As you read these passages, consider the following questions:

  • What do these passages reveal to us about the heart of God?
  • What does God desire?  What was God willing to do to make that desire a reality?
  • If this is God’s heart, how can or should this truth shape our hearts?  Practically speaking, what does this mean or look like in our daily lives?

In Exodus 19, God told Israel that they were created, called and covenanted to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.  Read 1 Peter 2:9-12, to discover a similar declaration.  How is this true of us individually?  What does this mean for us collectively?

Pray: Gracious God and Father, we desire to follow you as your disciples. Work in our hearts that we may seek to continue to grow as your disciple, becoming a disciple who makes disciples for your Kingdom. Amen.
