Engage People with a Great God (Class)

Course: What's Next - Vision For OSLM

October 26, 2020 | Dave Rueter
  • What starts here changes the world.”
  • Church is more than just coming to a particular place to go through the motions but is an invitation by God to step into the very presence of God.
  • This happens as we gather for worship as God meets us there in His Word, in communion, in baptism, and prayer.
  • God isn’t bound by a space or a place or a time but is with us wherever we go and works in our lives as engage with Him through time in His Word and prayer.
  • Many of the great world-changing moments in the Bible, begin with God engaging with people.
  • The progression that we see as Moses engages with God at the burning bush is:
  • Moses is living a very normal life.
  • God interrupts the ordinary to invite Moses to step into the extraordinary.
  • God initiates the engagement with Moses.
  • God reveals who He is to Moses.
  • God shows love, care, and compassion for Moses and the situation that Israel found itself in.
  • God sends Moses to be His hands and feet to Pharaoh and the nation of Israel to bring about their salvation.
  • As we engage with God, God renews and transforms us then sends us out into the world to be His hands and feet.

A common story shared with children in Sunday School is that while in the Garden of Eden, God walked through the garden with Adam and Eve. However, at closer inspection, we do not see a  reference to God walking through the garden with Adam and Eve in Genesis 1 or 2. Instead, the first reference to God “walking in the garden” and coming to where Adam and Eve were, was after the fall. When they were at their most broken and shameful state, the God of all creation met them where they were. He called out for them, seeking to reconnect and engage with them, despite the sins He knew they had committed.

  • What does God’s interaction with Adam and Eve in Genesis 3 say about Him?

Sometimes, we may not feel that we are in the right place or state of mind to engage with our good God. And sometimes we may not even know how to connect with Him. But, as seen in the story of the fall, even when we feel like we are far from God, He meets us where we are at, calling us to engage with Him.

  • When do you find it is easiest to connect with God, and why?
  • When is it difficult for you to connect with God, and why do you think that is the case?

Whether in the temple, on a mountain, in the belly of a fish, or on a neighboring cross, scripture shows God meeting His creation right where they are. What an amazing God we have!

  • Where do you need God to meet you right now?
  • What is one new way you can engage with God this week?
  • What is one area of your life that you can
    engage with God more?
